Animals Inhumanely Reared For Human Consumption

Animals Inhumanely Reared For Human Consumption

This blog post is a follow on from my previous post Cruelty-Free All The Way. Despite being vegan and mostly abstaining from dairy throughout my life because of my allergies (and guess what? I am not a baby cow! Perhaps there’s a reason why so many are intolerant to pasteurised dairy), I did not realise the extent that cows and calves suffer on dairy farms or how inhumane the rest of global animal farming is when it involves human consumption, our mere appetites, until after I had read the shocking book “The Silent Ark” by Juliet Gellatley. Two decades later it’s still PURE HORROR.

I have deliberately included sensitive information and imagery to highlight the issues that most people ignore or are complicit in. I want to reach as many people, and make them aware of the vital ethical questions we face daily. I hope you feel the same way by the end of this post and help by making a few changes in your world and speak to others about something that should be a criminal offense.

“Remember, as disturbing as it is to see this abuse, we only have to look at the pictures—the animals have to live it. They will have truly died in vain if they die without anyone documenting their suffering and shouting the injustice of it to the world. The animals are counting on us to do all we can to publicize their plight and motivate others to help them. If the photos really are too much for you, please consider passing our literature on to others who need such proof.” PETA

Meat Eater VS Vegan

Have you ever heard a vegan and meat-eater argue their reasons for not/ for eating dead animal flesh, respectively? It’s entertainment at its best.

Meat-Eater said, ‘Other animals kill other species in the wild, a lion kills an impala and that’s natural.’

‘Of course,’ Vegan agreed. ‘What lions sort of don’t do is farm impala and keep them captive in shocking conditions and torture them for extended periods before they are ready to eat their next meal. They also don’t make money from farming impalas… How about you head out to a field and capture a…’ Vegan struggled to think of what wild animals England had to offer. ‘Oh yes, a deer and then kill it with your bare hands? Or an urban fox would probably be easier… living in London…’

Meat-Eater said, ‘Vegans ruin the planet by stripping the soil of the nutrients and taking over the earth by vegetables.’

Vegan said, ‘A vegetable invasion? Love it! Better than aliens, wouldn’t you think…? Didn’t you know that 50% of the world’s crops are used to feed animals in the meat, dairy, and egg industries?’

Meat-Eater left the debate.

“It is not your right based on YOUR traditions, YOUR customs and YOUR habits to deny animals THEIR freedom so you can harm them, enslave them and kill them. That’s not what rights are about. That’s injustice. There is no counter-argument to veganism. Accept it. Apologize for the way you’ve been living. Make amends and move forward.”

Dairy’s Dark Secret

Imagine, you are a mother. Day one, the doctor tears your newborn from your arms while in the hospital. Never to be reunited with your child again. They then fed your baby milk replacers (including human blood) to sell your milk… You are then artificially inseminated shortly before your child’s first birthday. After giving birth, you lactate for ten months and they inseminate you again, continuing the cycle. They move you to a confined space, and you will spend your entire life standing on concrete floors; or confined to massive, crowded lots, where you are forced to live, eat, and sleep in knee-high faeces. And if your leg joints become swollen, ulcerated, etc. you will receive no medical attention.

Welcome to dairy farming!

PETA: Cow’s Milk: A Cruel and Unhealthy Product

“PETA’s mission statement is that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”

“Given the chance, cows nurture their young and form lifelong friendships with one another. They play games and have a wide range of emotions and personality traits. But most cows raised for the dairy industry are intensively confined, leaving them unable to fulfil their most basic desires, such as nursing their calves, even for a single day. They are treated like milk-producing machines and are genetically manipulated and may be pumped full of antibiotics and hormones in order to produce more milk. While cows suffer on these farms, humans who drink their milk increase their chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many other ailments…”

If you watch this horrific one-minute video on how cows are inhumanely treated on dairy farms, I doubt you’d ever touch milk and milk-derived products for the rest of your life.

Closing-Time

So many small, independent farmers, who cared about their environment and livestock, treating them with “compassion”, were forced to close because the costs to produce such a cheap product turned unfeasible.

Where do your meat and animal-derived products come from?

Eating animal, from its dead flesh to its milk, today – without knowing where it comes from and how the animal is treated during its lifespan and then how it’s treated at the slaughterhouse and what its effects are on the planet – is as smart as slapping on a bomber vest, pushing the button that will kill hundreds of “infidels” so that you will go to heaven to be pleasured by many virgins… Is it just girl virgins or will there be boy virgins too should one be brave enough to admit their “abnormal” sexual orientation? If their God is the same as the Catholic God? God forbid, then I suppose not! God in heaven does not approve of homosexuality. Unless they don’t even entertain the thought, never mind the act of being homosexual for the sake of being beheaded before reaching martyrdom status. What awaits female suicide bombers in heaven? Boy virgins? Pure peace – an afterlife without the opposite sex…? Google???

Your Beloved Pets

First, would you eat your pet? Second, would you be okay with anyone killing your pet for their next meal? Well, in China dog meat boosts overall health; promotes warmth, blood circulation, and male fertility. This article outlines 10 Countries Where Your Pet Is Just Livestock How scrumptious!

Once, a very long time ago. I ate a crocodile steak while at a friend’s wedding in Namibia. Not that it was anyone’s pet. It tasted of fish and chicken. I wonder what a cat or a dog would taste like? A fat juicy little sausage dog… Actually, I don’t…

Perhaps the next time you eat dead animal flesh, think about your dog Poppy or cat Tigger being eaten by a person that believes it’s a delicacy. Or even, go one step further, and imagine what your pet would taste like as a steak or stew or whatever your favourite meat dish would be.

And then there’s cannibalism; we are all animals after all… Perhaps if a stupid person eats an intelligent person, they may develop some intelligence? If there were more Hannibal Lecters (“I ate his liver with some fava beans, and a nice chianti.”)… and the Korowai tribe, the last people on earth to still practice cannibalism, around it would help with the overpopulation crisis and the four-legged plus animals would be safe. Does anyone want a piece of me? I’ve been called “Cressalicious” on occasion. Yummy-yummy.

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows by Melanie Joy Page offers an absorbing look at what social psychologist Melanie Joy calls carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals when we would never dream of eating others. Carnism causes extensive animal suffering and global injustice, and it drives us to act against our own interests and the interests of others without fully realizing what we are doing. Becoming aware of what carnism is and how it functions is vital to personal empowerment and social transformation, as it enables us to make our food choices more freely—because without awareness, there is no free choice.

What Do Your Morals Say About You?

Can an animal lover who hates cruelty towards animals truly be an animal lover if he or she is a carnivore? Of course! Wait for it… cognitive dissonance and moral disengagement.

What would you think of a man who says he loves women, fights for them to be equal with men and then rapes one? One doesn’t need to rape to have good sex and neither does one need to eat meat (indirectly murder animals to merely satiate a tastebud) to live a healthy life.

Did You Know these Unsettling Facts About Eating Animals?

Cancer Risk
The World Health Organization placed processed meats like bacon and hot dogs in the same category of cancer risk as asbestos and cigarettes.

Most Greenhouse Gases
The meat industry emits more greenhouse gases than all forms of transportation in the world combined.

Yum-Yum Plastics
People who eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic each year.

Thumping
Piglets who are deemed too sick or small are killed by being slammed headfirst onto concrete floors. This barbaric standard industry practice is called thumping.

Faecal Contamination
In 2011, the USDA reported that 90 percent of defects discovered in chicken carcasses at slaughter plants involved “visible fecal contamination that was missed by company employees.”

Chronic Pain Chronic Abuse
Chickens raised for meat have been bred to grow so quickly they frequently become immobilized under their own weight and endure chronic pain.

Vegans & Vegetarians Live Longer
The Mayo Clinic found that long-term vegetarians live on average 3.6 years longer than their meat-eating counterparts.

Murder of Other Wild Animals
The meat industry kills bears, coyotes, wolves, foxes, prairie dogs, and other wildlife so people can keep eating meat.

Unwanted Fish
The National Journal estimates that 20 percent of fish caught by commercial fisheries is “bycatch,” or unwanted fish. Additionally, other animals like sea turtles, seals, whales, porpoises, dolphins, and sharks are trapped in huge trawling nets and often die.

Suffering from Severe Depression
A Royal Society Open Science study found that fish at factory farms suffer from severe depression and sometimes “drop out, or float around lifelessly.

Daily Mutilations
Dehorning, tail docking, debeaking, and castration are mutilations performed daily at factory farms without painkillers.

Non-Existent Joy
Most cows, pigs, and chickens at factory farms won’t feel the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks and sent to slaughter.

High-Speed Meat Grinder
The UK egg industry wants you to believe its tales of “happy” chickens, but in reality, birds on egg farms are typically forced to lay in horrific conditions day after day until they’re eventually sent to slaughter. For male chicks, life usually ends when it has barely begun. Because they can’t lay eggs and haven’t been bred to produce excessive flesh for meat, they’re regarded as useless and are literally thrown away. They face a horrific death – either tossed into the rubbish and left to suffocate or thrown alive into a high-speed meat grinder.

If you are still not convinced… Meet Gary Yourofsky at ADAPTT.

“Lecturing is a softer approach for Yourofsky, who has been arrested numerous times for random acts of kindness and compassion, and banished by five countries from entering their borders. In 1997, Gary liberated more than 1,500 soon-to-be-murdered minks from the Eberts Fur Farm in Blenheim, Ontario. Several attorneys, led by Donald Perkins, Esq., tried to pass a resolution in Michigan in honor of Yourofsky’s actions. “We recognize that throughout this nation’s history, other individuals, acting from conscience have similarly violated certain laws and ordinances. In our own time, these same principles of nonviolent disobedience to unjust laws have been applied by such individuals as the Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., both of whom were—as was Michigan’s Gary Yourofsky—sentenced to jail for their actions.”

73 Cows Documentary – A Restoration of Faith in Homo Sapiens

73 Cows tells the (15 minute) story of Jay Wilde, the first farmer in the UK to trade beef farming for sustainable organic vegan farming, giving up his entire herd of cattle in the process. 73 Cows won the BAFTA in 2019 for British Short Film. It premiered at Raindance Film Festival and was also screened at European Parliament before policy makers in a bid to inspire changes in agricultural law. 73 Cows has been covered by news outlets across the world including The Times and The Guardian, as well as being featured on national TV News. For a no budget film, I’m really proud of what we achieved with this film.

At the 11th minute and 55 seconds of the documentary is the most beautiful sighting. A laugh and a tear of pure joy escaped my body…

Hillside Animal Sanctuary

I’ve fallen in love with Hillside Animal Sanctuary (who took in Jay Wilde’s cows) after watching 73 Cows and have since “adopted” Frosty the goat. Many other animals need help here. I struggled to choose. In the end, I remember meeting Yo-Yo, a goat in South Africa who had more personality than any dog I’d met. And she was a genius in climbing trees to fetch the most delicious leaves for a snack, and she could eat a hind leg off a…

Food Ingredients that are Surprisingly Not Vegan

As mentioned in my previous post, I have always, since first becoming vegan/vegetarian in 2000, checked the ingredients list of food items. Some ingredients are disguised and it’s unclear that they come from animal or animal-derived products.

The Vegan Trademark is appearing on more and more products which states that a product is 100% free from animal ingredients, making it easier to find all things vegan.

There are several foods, drinks, and even non-edible items that might surprise you for not being vegan.

White sugar
Most sugar is processed using bone char, the bones of cattle.

Marshmallows
Most marshmallows contain gelatine, which is derived from pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides and fish bones. Thank god there are vegan varieties out there for hot chocolate…

Alcohols
Some wines and beers are clarified with fish bladders, casein (mammalian milk), bone marrow, and gelatine.

Apple juice
Some apple juices are clarified using fish bladders.

Fizzy drinks
A lot of fizzy drinks contain insect-derived dyes and gelatine.

Tattoo ink
Many black dyes are made from charcoal, which comes from burning animal bones.

Jam
Some jams contain gelatine.

Breakfast Cereal
Cereals may contain sheep grease! Vitamin D3 is used to fortify many major breakfast kinds of cereal and is derived from lanolin. Lanolin is an oil that comes from sheep’s wool and is often found in cosmetics.

Wine Gums/Jelly Sweets
Unfortunately, most of the major gummy brands like Haribo use gelatine as an ingredient and are 100% non-vegetarian food, never mind non-vegan.

Soups
Many soups, especially in restaurants, are made with chicken stock, beef stock, or fish stock. Most split pea soups contain ham stock.

Worcestershire Sauce
Standard Worcestershire sauce is made with anchovies. Bonsan Organic Vegan Worcester is a delicious alternative.

Pesto Sauce
Traditional pesto sauce is made with parmesan cheese, which in itself is not even vegetarian! Basic Parmesan uses an enzyme called rennet that is found in the stomach lining of goats and calves.

Waxed Fruit
The perfect-looking fruits that are so shiny… the wax may contain shellac or beeswax from insects.

Honey
When we use honey, which is made by bees for bees and not for humans, we are exploiting the insects. Most beekeepers clip the queen bee’s wings so that they do not leave the hive, and replace their honey with a sugar alternative that is detrimental to the health of bees. Read more at the Vegan Society here.

PETA provides an endless list of animal-derived ingredients and their alternatives here.

“A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite.”
-Leo Tolstoy

…And not to forget the destruction of planet Earth…

“To avoid causing terror to living beings, let the disciple refrain from eating meat… the food of the wise is that which is consumed by the sadhus [holymen]; it does not consist of meat… There may be some foolish people in the future who will say that I permitted meat-eating and that I partook of meat myself, but… meat-eating I have not permitted to anyone, I do not permit, I will not permit meat-eating in any form, in any manner and in any place; it is unconditionally prohibited for all.”
-Gautama Buddha

  1. Dear Cressida,

Another passionate and illuminating post from you, leaving no stone unturned and throwing facts through the screen of person reading it. I agree everyone should read “The Silent Ark” it is a compelling and shocking read. I do have one bone to pick with you. The sugar company I work for does not use animal bone charcoal to clarify sugar syrup, it uses ion exchange resin. Again, I commend you to get your article published for a wider audience, it is brilliant.

    1. Dear Peter,

Thank you for appreciating another one of my “passionate and illuminating” posts when it comes to cruelty-free and not exploiting animals for personal gain. We need to be more aware of our actions and make choices that align with our values, not deciding we are more important than animals and have a right to abuse and enslave for our stomachs or attire.

I am most delighted to know that the company you work for does not use animal by-products to produce their sugar.

      Take care,
      Cressida
