Goodbye Danny

When I reached the gate, I said, ‘What are you doing here, Ryan?’

‘I wanted to say goodbye.’

‘How did you know I was leaving now?’

‘Everyone knows, Sophia.’

‘You have to go. Danny’s going to be here any —’

‘I can’t sleep at night from worrying about you.’ He stared into my eyes. I watched his mouth open and then his body stumble backwards.

‘Ryan, what’s wrong?’ I wrapped my hands around the steel bars of the gate.

‘Your eyes. Your eyes are dead, Sophia. Your beautiful eyes no longer look eager for the unexpected. They are dead,’ he repeated.

‘Ryan, do you have any idea what Danny will do if he sees you here?’

He didn’t seem to hear me. ‘Can’t you see what he’s doing to you? Your skin is turning a greyish colour.’

‘For oath’s sake! Thanks for that. I can’t wait to look at myself in the mirror now. What are you trying to do? Make me charge into your arms? Bloody hell —’

‘Listen to yourself, Sophia. I’ve never heard you swear in —’

‘When did I swear? Oh, you’re referring to the word bloody, are you? It’s hardly a swear word, damn it! Oops, I’ve just gone and released another vulgar one. What are you going to do with me, Ryan? Ha!’

‘I’m here for you if you need me. If you need anything, I’ll do my best for you. Sophia, you can count on me as a friend. Have a safe trip, and be careful. I really wish you all the best.’ He stepped backwards, and while never removing his gaze from my face, he climbed into his car and drove off.

I stood there for a minute, watching him drive down the road, out of sight, all the time searching for any sign of Danny.
